And here we are again at Sweet blog, the sweetest blog online.
And today, we will deviate a little from our customs and take you for a walk outside, straight to your backyard.
Contrary to popular belief, a backyard is an integral part of the concept known as "home." And its quality design is also an essential component of the quality of your home. Therefore, please do yourself a favor and do not make the common mistake and neglect it.
In this article, we will help you understand the types of backyard design that exist (the most common at least), and we will try to clarify for you, as much as possible, the precise contours for each of them so that you can make the specific adjustment that works for you.
And as always, at the end of the article, there will be a refreshing infographic presentation to summarize its content for you.
1. Make it wild.
Intuitively, the average person's first perception of a typical backyard is a defined area that is not really an integral part of his home but a kind of home-nature combination. Ex Territory that is painted in natural green.
As a result of this common perception, the type of backyard design we will talk about in this paragraph, which we will call - "the wild," - arises.
The wild design is indeed characterized by being a highlight of the house's exterior. He will still be part of the house but express a more profound link to nature.
You will mostly see there a lovely garden and lots of greenery and Furniture characterized by durability to stay in outdoor conditions, and possibly also some fruit and ornamental trees.
The main principle underlying this type of design is the desire to leave nature precisely as it is - in nature - and due to its proximity to human residence, it will be given some aspects of 'home' (Furniture, delicate landscaping, and more). But its main imprint will still be mainly natural and green.
Imagine a classic grandmother's garden in the village - something like that.
Into the wild!
As mentioned, the things you will usually find in a backyard of this type are:
Simple and durable furniture.
Diverse seedlings and plants.
Empty and full planters.
Simple rocking chairs.
Extremely minimal and straightforward lighting.
Everything you need for a BBQ.
An old lawnmower.
The lack of a significant and absolute partition towards the nature surrounding the house - in such a garden, you feel at home, but also a bit like part of nature.
It will usually also contain discarded scrap/bicycle skeletons, etc.
And maybe even a tiny, old-fashioned warehouse. And more.
You will not find in this style sophistication or outside-the-box thinking. Everything is very simplistic and concrete.
Now for our two cents regarding this type of design:
It can indeed be said to be the most authentic, You can even find some similarities between it and the well-known vintage style (which you can see here. And by the way, We deliberately chose not to talk about design styles such as vintage and retro and more, but only to focus on abstract design ideas). But despite the nostalgia that may be rising, we do not believe that there is a design justification in our modern and advanced world for this old-fashioned style.
The concept of backyard design has progressed a lot. And with all due respect to this style, its origin is far from the past, and it is supposed to stay there.
2. The modern design.
The next type of design we will talk about is modern design.
Contrary to what is presented in section 1, this concept tries to "bring the interior of the house to the outside" instead of wanting to preserve nature as nature.
Imagine that your living room, with all its components, moves out to a place not bounded by concrete called a backyard.
You will see minor “wild nature” in such a backyard and more colors and artificial materials.
In most cases, the ground will not be green (grass) but covered with flooring/deck. Also, most of the accessories you will see will be made of synthetic materials.
The guiding principle is - minor 'nature' and more synthetics, modernity, and home comfort.
Moreover, beyond the home comfort you will probably find in a backyard of this type, you will also come across creative design elements in which much thought and planning have been invested.
So if we summarize for a moment all the elements that would typically contain this type of backyard, this would roughly be the list:
A Portable Propane Fire Pit
Backyard Streams, Ponds, and Waterfalls
TV viewing area
A Play Area With a Sandbox and Tire Swing
Outland Living Backyard Fire Table
A Wood Fire Pit
Backyard as another room in the house
All these and more are part of what you will find in that modern-style backyard.

And now for our two cents as to this style.
Well, we significantly prefer this style over the previous one, which, as mentioned, is more outdated. We need to pay attention to the fact that we do not entirely lose the concept of nature and turn the backyard into another room in the house.
It is legitimate to give your yard a comfortable/modern, and homely feeling. We are entirely in favor of that. Just remember during this process to make sure there is a clear difference between the house and the yard. Excessive design and modernization can lead to a complete blurring of those boundaries, which no one wants.
And with this insight, we will move on to the next paragraph.
3. Intermediate style.
In the paragraphs above, we have expressed our professional opinion on the different styles and their suitability.
Although it is pretty clear that we are more supportive of adopting the second style over the first, we still have some doubts and reservations about it, especially regarding the option of completely blurring the boundaries between the backyard and the house itself and erasing the backyard's uniqueness.
Therefore, naturally, the ideal style in our view is somewhere in the middle:
A style that, on the one hand, will get most of the features of the modern style and, on the other hand, will still have few elements of green and wild nature.
Find the middle ground!
